How I Got the Shot

I love capturing shadows. Photography has taught me how to embrace the shadows both metaphorically and literally when shooting. I've endured much trauma in my life, and I used to think I had to run away or hide from the shadows, but photography has shown me that shadows define where the light is. A father's embrace of his newborn baby is an intimate moment of both strength and vulnerability. We don't need to see his face to know that his love runs deep. Portrait photography isn't necessarily about capturing faces. Portrait photography is about capturing the human spirit.

This image does the dance between shadows and highlights, and I love that the α7R II retains detail with both. Being able to capture detail in the shadows accentuates the story of depth and emotion in this moment. That's the beauty of Dynamic Range, two words I've come to love with the α7R II.
